Celtic and Aston Villa are facing competition from Lyon for Heart of Midlothian defender Aaron Hickey, according to The Scottish Sun.

It has been reported that Villa, Celtic, Lazio and Manchester City all are interested in signing Hickey from Hearts, who will play in the Scottish Championship next season.

However, according to the report, Lyon – who will play in the semi-finals of the Champions League this season after beating City in the last eight – have joined the race for the youngster and could make a move for the teenager before the 2020-21 Ligue 1 season starts next weekend.

No need to rush

Hickey is a very talented and promising young defender who has established himself as a regular in the Hearts team.

Described by former Hearts manager Daniel Stendel as “an extraordinary talent” who is “like Philipp Lahm” in The Scottish Sun this month, the Scotsman is only 18 years of age, and it is clear that he has time on his hands.

There is no need for the teenager to make a quick decision, as the summer transfer window will run until October.

True, playing in the Scottish Championship next season will be a step-down for Hickey, but the 18-year-old should think carefully about his next club, as he needs to continue his development and progress by playing regular first-team football.
