Leeds United are reportedly keen to extend Jack Clarke’s contract.

Despite sitting at the top of the Championship for much of the season, many Leeds fans have made it clear in recent months that not signing anyone in January could be a big mistake.

Marcelo Bielsa has had to deal with an incredible number of injuries after already trimming the squad in the summer. Leeds have dealt with the problems superbly, but there is still a long way to go.

And having previously given the impression that they may be expecting a quiet window, the Whites have sprung into life.

The Yorkshire Evening Post reports that a deal for Real Madrid goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is close, and The Sun on Sunday (13/1; page 59) reported that they were looking at Swansea pair Jefferson Montero and Dan James, with the latter eyed on a permanent deal.

But perhaps the smartest piece of business that Leeds could possibly get done this month involves winger Jack Clarke, amid reports from the Daily Mail that the youngster is attracting attention from Premier League clubs.

It is no surprise that Clarke is wanted by top flight sides. His form since getting his chance in the first-team has been remarkable, and Leeds fans would be forgiven for feeling that the wide-man will be playing in the Premier League next year whether the Whites are there or not.

The Mail adds that Leeds want to agree a new contract with the teenager. And should they manage to get that deal across the line, that may well be the best move of the window no matter who they sign.

Casilla could be a brilliant signing, Montero can be a dangerous player and James is clearly one youngster to keep a very close eye on in the future.

But Clarke is a special talent. Extending his contract would be a massive statement, and perhaps no deal the club complete this month could boost their promotion hopes more.
