Lee Erwin sent a message to Leeds boss Garry Monk after scoring a wonderful winner in Oldham’s victory over Northampton Town on Tuesday night.

Erwin is still a Leeds player, but has spent the entirety of this campaign on loan with the League One outfit, having struggled to make much of an impact at Elland Road.

And while the majority of his spell at Boundary Park would have done little to make Monk sit up and take notice, his contribution against the Cobblers may have helped his cause just ever so slightly.

With the game heading into stoppage-time at 1-1, the Scotsman – who was signed during Uwe Rosler’s brief time in charge but has only appeared for his parent club under Steve Evans – received the ball about 25 yards from goal.

The 22-year-old then proceeded to move the ball onto his left foot before drilling his effort into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area to hand the Latics the victory.

While it will surely take several more of those kind of goals to convince Monk that he is deserving of a chance upon his return to Leeds, the strike would have surely done his chances of one day making an impact for the Whites no harm at all, especially given the club’s striker situation.

Chris Wood has been sensational this season, but behind him, there is little available to Monk unless he dips into the youth team as neither Marcus Antonsson or Souleymane Doukara have really proved themselves this term.

And although Monk will get a chance to dip into the transfer market by the time Erwin in back in contention for the Whites – and thus, he may end up even further down the pecking order – strikes like the one against Northampton may not go completely unnoticed and may help the forward get one final chance to prove that he can be one of Wood’s understudies at Elland Road.
