Barrow boss Paul Cox is a contender for the vacant manager’s job at Hartlepool United, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Hartlepool are searching for a new manager in the wake of their relegation from League Two last weekend.

Dave Jones left Hartlepool by mutual consent last month after the club dropped into the League Two relegation zone with Matthew Bates taking interim charge for the final two games of the season, but he was unable to prevent the club from suffering relegation from the Football League after 96 years.

Pools are now looking to bring in a manager with experience in the National League as they aim to win promotion back to League Two at the first time of asking.

Cox fits the bill for Hartlepool having guided Mansfield Town to promotion back into the Football League in 2013 after a five-year absence.

The 45-year-old was appointed Mansfield boss in the summer of 2011 after Mansfield had finished 12th in the Conference, and led them to promotion in his second year in charge.

Cox, who has also managed Eastwood Town and Torquay United, is currently in charge at Barrow after taking over at the club in November 2015.

Cox guided Barrow to the third round of the FA Cup this season with a famous win over Bristol Rovers in the second round and he is highly-regarded in coaching circles.

Barrow finished in seventh spot in the National League this season just missing out on the play-offs and they are keen to keep hold of Cox, but are bracing themselves for interest in the manager this summer.
