Ben Godfrey was brought to Everton to provide cover in the centre of defence.

But he hasn’t been seen too often at the heart of Carlo Ancelotti’s back four, instead deputising for Seamus Coleman and Lucas Digne at full-back.

He did get a game at centre-half against Leeds on Wednesday night and put in another eye-catching performance.

In an exclusive interview, we asked former Toffee Nigel Martyn about the way Godfrey’s settled into life at Goodison Park.

“He looks an Everton player already,” said Martyn of Godfrey. “Very good, and I think the biggest thing is he’s being picked every week.

“Wherever it is, whether it’s centre-half, left-back or right-back, the manager finds a spot for him. That shows how highly he’s thought of.

“His performance at Leeds was excellent. I think the whole defence played well and it was a strong performance.

“He was probably the star in that.”

That midweek win will be even sweeter for Godfrey given the fact he was rejected by Leeds as a young player.

He has had to get to the top in a different way, via non-league, but all the signs are that he’s got the quality to forge a very long career there.

As Martyn said, Ancelotti has already discovered that he can rely on Godfrey to do a job in whichever role is asked of him.

Godfrey has been talked about as a future England international and it won’t be long until he’s in that conversation if he keeps performing like this.
