The Magpies are one of the biggest clubs in England and have got a strong following, often getting 50,000 or so fans for their home matches at St. James’ Park.
Rafael Benitez’s side, though, have not made a great start on their return to the Premier League.
Newcastle are 14th in the league table at the moment with just three points from as many matches.
Former Liverpool and Newcastle winger Barnes has stated that the Magpies’ target this season should be survival in the Premier League.
In an exclusive interview with HITC Sport, Barnes, speaking on behalf of Bonus Code Bets, said when asked what Newcastle’s target should be this season: “The target for each club coming up should be survival.
“Newcastle are a big club, they have got a big stadium, but I think that in the first year if they can survive, then they can build on next year rather that thinking because they are in the Premier League let’s go finish in the top six or the top 10.”
Newcastle will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Swansea City away from home at the Liberty Stadium in the Premier League.
The Magpies signed Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo and Mikel Merino (loan) among other players in the summer transfer window.
