‘Exciting times’: International boss hints player has been talking about potential Newcastle move

Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough has told Sky Sports News (06/09/20 at 9:25 pm) that there are ‘exciting times’ ahead for Jamal Lewis amid rumours about a move to Newcastle.

The Telegraph have claimed that Newcastle have had a £13.5 million bid accepted from Norwich for his services.

Lewis is currently on international duty with Northern Ireland where he will be hoping to help Baraclough’s side prove their worth in the UEFA Nations League.

Even though nothing has been confirmed, Baraclough did hint that Lewis’ potential move to St James’ Park has been talked about on international duty.

“Exciting times for him,” Baraclough told Sky Sports. “There’s one or two who have been in the squad and have been talking about possibly moving onto other clubs.

“But for Jamal, it would be stepping back into the Premier League. We feel as though he’s a Premier League player. He has got all the attributes for that. He’s still learning in a lot of ways.

“If he was to complete a move to Newcastle then I think Steve Bruce will be a fantastic manager for him to give him more of an education and take him onto another level. What a club it would be to move to. The Newcastle fans, I am sure, would be pleased to see him flying up and down the left-hand side.”

There’s no doubt that Steve Bruce needs squad depth at the back, and after Danny Rose’s loan ended, Newcastle needed another addition on that left-hand side.

A couple of months ago, given how all this takeover saga was going, not many would have expected the North East club to be in a situation where they are seemingly closing in on so many deals.

Now, nothing has been completed yet, but if players do come through the doors then it will provide a much-needed boost for those already at Newcastle.
