Exciting for everyone… Newcastle United star Rob Elliot reacts to takeover speculation

Newcastle United appear set for a takeover in the coming weeks.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has told The Mirror that he thinks the rumours of a takeover of the club are ‘exciting for everyone’.

The Magpies picked up a late 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon, with midfielder Mikel Merino grabbing the winner, heading home Matt Ritchie’s corner to claim the win.

It’s now just one defeat in the last seven games for Newcastle, with Rafael Benitez stabilising his side after two losses to open their return to the Premier League.

Newcastle are heading in the right direction under Benitez, as they sit seventh in the Premier League table, just two points off a Champions League place.

Whilst fans have been impressed with matters on the pitch this season, they have also been hoping for changes off the pitch, given Mike Ashley’s continued reign as owner of the club.

Ashley has been largely unpopular with Newcastle fans ever since his arrival in 2007, but his ten-year stint with the Magpies appears to be coming to an end, after he put the club up for sale last week.

Sky Sports report that Amanda Staveley and PCP Capital Partners signed confidentiality agreement with Ashley, putting them in the box seat to complete the purchase of the Magpies.

Now, goalkeeper Rob Elliot has told The Mirror that all the talk of a takeover is ‘exciting’, and whilst the players will focus on on-field matters, he wants somebody to come in and take the club forward over the coming years.

“There’s obviously interest which is exciting for everyone,” said Elliot. “Hopefully someone comes in who can take the club forward, which will be great. The infrastructure is fantastic.”

“As players we just hope everything works out for the club because we’ve been through a lot these past few years, but there’s a positive vibe around the place and we’ve got to make sure we continue with that. We want this to be a long-term thing, where we’re always looking forward and not back,” he added.
