Speaking to Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Cesc Fabregas has been full of praise for the Gunners’ Sporting Director Edu and the manager Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal have been undergoing something of a massive rebuild in recent years, and Edu has been at the heart of that alongside Arteta.

The Gunners may not have returned to playing Champions League football just yet, but it’s fair to say that they’re moving in the right direction.

Fabregas has certainly been impressed by what he’s seen, stating that the pair are both doing fantastic jobs.

What’s been said?

Fabregas praised Arteta and Edu.

“I think Mikel is doing a fantastic job. I think Edu is doing a fantastic job,” he said.

“Not only for what they are doing, we talk about football people. Edu is a football man and he has had the patience and he knows what it takes to build a project. You cannot do it in one day.

“Sometimes the market doesn’t allow you to get the right player, sometimes you are too young to compete, as it happened at Arsenal for one or two years.

“They are mature now, the younger players are not as young anymore. I see a different phase. They signed very well and they strengthened in certain areas where they were struggling. I am really looking forward to the season, it’s exciting.”

Jumping the gun

Fabregas is absolutely right to praise Edu and Arteta, but we can’t help but feel as though he’s jumping the gun by calling them fantastic.

Yes, they’re helping Arsenal move in the right direction, but the reality is that the Gunners are still at their lowest ebb in 20 years.

Five consecutive seasons without Champions League football is, quite simply, unacceptable, and if that standard is seen as ‘fantastic’ you have to fear for the ambition this club harbours.

Things are looking up at Arsenal, but it’s a real stretch to describe things as fantastic at this point.
