Aston Villa have some very exciting youngsters coming out of Villa Park right now – Jacob Ramsey, Louie Barry and Carney Chukwuemeka, to name a few.

However, there’s another name who could well be in contention for a first-team role next season if he keeps his current form up – Cameron Archer.

What’s the story?

Well, the 20-year-old joined Preston on loan in January, and he’s taken no time at all to impress at Deepdale.

Archer scored the only goal of the game today as Preston recorded a 1-0 win over Peterborough, which moved the Championship side up to 11th.

It was the wonderkid’s third goal in six Championship games since he joined the Lilywhites, where he’s become an immediate fan favourite.

Now, across all competitions this season including at youth level, Archer has scored 14 goals in 17 games – a fantastic return, to say the least.

Aston Villa should give Cameron Archer a chance

It would send out a great message to the rest of Aston Villa’s loanees if they saw Archer rewarded for his efforts with a first-team role next season.

As things stand, Steven Gerrard doesn’t have a wealth of centre-forward options behind Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.

Instead of signing another attacker, Archer should be entrusted to start in cup competitions, as well as a few minutes in the Premier League here and there.

This season, the England Under-20 international has played on the right flank as well as in the centre, so his versatility is another potential attraction for Gerrard.

After all, Archer himself is desperate for a chance, as he revealed he was keen to “kick on” after signing a new contract in December (Birmingham Mail).

If the Villans fail to reward their young prospects for doing well, then don’t be surprised to see them eventually request a move away.
