Aston Villa are reportedly set to speak to Rangers about hiring Steven Gerrard.

According to The Guardian, the Premier League outfit will make an official approach to Rangers’ hierarchy this week.

The Ibrox club would absolutely hate to lose the manager who broke Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid in Glasgow last season, delivering a first Premiership title in a decade.

But the 41-year-old is reportedly open to the role at Aston Villa following their dismissal of Dean Smith.

And Richard Dunne, speaking to Sky Sports, is chuffed by the prospect of Gerrard joining his former club.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s very exciting. He is obviously a young manger, he hasn’t been in the management game very long but what he has done at Rangers has been exceptional.

“He has led that club very well in the few years he has been there. He has won the league now and has European experience as well.”

As mentioned, Rangers fans would be distraught but if Gerrard wants to go, there’s nothing much that can be done.

Yes he is under contract but, by the same token, Aston Villa are desperate for Gerrard and that means they’ll pay handsomely to get him.

The Villans have lost their last five Premier League games, hence Smith’s axing, but they need a new man as soon as possible.

Stability is so important in times like these and the sooner Gerrard – or somebody else – is appointed, the better for Villa.
