Two great Tottenham sides compared… which was/is better?
On the comments section on HITC Sport, the optimism surrounding Tottenham Hotspur prompted some discussion from fans about which team was better… Harry Redknapp’s best at White Hart Lane or Mauricio Pochettino’s current side?
It’s a very interesting talking point. While neither can be that directly compared and Pochettino’s team is so centred on unity and not individuals, one possible way of examining is to look at two starting XIs.
Tottenham’s most recent – against Watford – and Redknapp’s during the 3-1 win over Inter Milan in the Champions League…
GK: Carlo Cudicini v Hugo Lloris
Even if Heurelho Gomes is thrown in as no.1, it’s a no contest as Pochettino’s man wins here.
RB: Alan Hutton v Kieran Trippier
Despite being Tottenham’s no.2 right-back, it’s another victory for the current side – while Kyle Walker would also win.
CB: Younes Kaboul v Toby Alderweireld
An absolute no contest once again – 3-0 to Pochettino so far.
CB: William Gallas v Kevin Wimmer
A first victory for Redknapp. However, most of Redknapp’s other centre-backs wouldn’t compare to Jan Vertonghen… except the iconic Ledley King.
LB: Benoit Assou-Ekotto v Ben Davies
Davies might edge this one and Danny Rose would win it more convincingly.
DM: Tom Huddlestone v Eric Dier
Huddlestone may have had more experience at the time but Dier has earned an England call-up this season, a clear sign his Spurs form is superior.
DM: Luka Modric v Mousa Dembele
Another clear victory for Redknapp’s men. Modric and Gareth Bale are duly thrilling Real Madrid fans on a weekly basis such is their world-class talent.
LW: Gareth Bale v Nacer Chadli
In any position, against any player, Bale obviously wins.
RW: Erik Lamela v Aaron Lennon
Perhaps the closest call. In terms of natural ability, Lamela should win it outright but, in terms of his form at the time, Lennon takes it for Redknapp’s Spurs.
CAM: Rafael van der Vaart v Christian Eriksen
Another close one. VDV to take it only just – but Dele Alli might edge it and could certainly eclipse the Dutchman with time at White Hart Lane.
CF: Peter Crouch v Harry Kane
As good as Crouch was as a target man with the many goals he scored, there is no comparison – Kane takes this one.
Verdict: Pochettino’s XI wins it 6-5.
