Tim Sherwood told Soccer Special on Sky Sports (16/02/21 at 9:55 pm) that Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG were playing ‘exactly like Tottenham’ of old as they dispatched Barcelona 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
In one of the great European performances, Kylian Mbappe netted a stunning hat-trick against the La Liga giants during the first leg encounter.
For former Spurs boss Pochettino, it was a statement of intent, as life in his new job has started off in a rosy fashion.
Sherwood touched upon Pochettino’s tactics on the night and how he will win a trophy in France after failing to do so in England.
“It’s really interesting watching PSG,” said Sherwood. “Pochettino has taken over from a Tuchel side, who like to play three at the back.
“He has gone exactly like Tottenham have gone over the last five years. 4-3-3. You go for the jugular. You try and win the ball high up the field.
“It’s exactly what they are doing. Playing on the front foot and creating chances. Wonderful to watch.
“It’s a Pochettino identity. He played like that at Tottenham. He never managed to win anything. I think he has a great chance of winning something at PSG. I think domestically they will clean up. And you have to give them a great chance in the Champions League.”
A certain Dele Alli will be watching on from North London and thinking ‘what if’ after it was well-documented that he wanted to reunite with his former manager.
It will be interesting to see how things pan out for Pochettino at PSG because a lot was made of the football he played at Spurs without lifting a trophy.
Whilst PSG have been running riot in France’s top-tier in recent years, they are currently sitting in second-place and they have a fight on their hands against current leaders Lille.
