Ex-West Ham United forward Dean Ashton slates Tottenham Hotspur’s Mauricio Pochettino

West Ham United beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in League Cup action last night.

Dean Ashton has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 26th October, that he found Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino’s comments ‘pathetic’.

Pochettino claimed before Spurs’ match against West Ham United that he wasn’t too fussed about progressing in the Carabao Cup.

The Argentine boss said that his focus was on ‘real trophies’, rather than the League Cup.

But Ashton has slated Pochettino for suggesting that Spurs had no interest in lifting the League Cup.

The former West Ham man said: “I think it’s pathetic. I think it’s just an excuse. Surely he wants his team to get a winning mentality. Especially with Tottenham, they need to win something. I think you saw last night, that lack of experience of winning things.

“I think when the manager comes out and says those things it does seep into those players.”

Pochettino’s comments may have backfired, as Spurs were made to pay for their complacency last night.

Tottenham raced into a 2-0 lead against West Ham, but they then seemed to take their foot off the gas.

Spurs failure to play with any sort of tempo in the second-half allowed West Ham back into the contest, and Slaven Bilic’s side took their chance.

The Hammers scored twice through Andre Ayew, before Angelo Ogbonna bagged a winner.

Spurs’ attention will now return to their Premier League campaign, with their next match coming against Manchester United at the weekend.
