Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Richarlison from Watford just a few months after his move to Vicarage Road.
Former Tottenham scout Rob MacKenzie has suggested to Sky Sports that Richarlison has the potential to become a special player and has predicted that the interest in the Watford forward could intensify if he goes to next year’s World Cup.
Richarlison has been something of a revelation for the Hornets following his £11.2 million move in the summer – fee reported by the Daily Mirror – scoring four and contributing two assists in the Premier League to help Marco Silva’s men go into this international break ninth in the top flight.
And MacKenzie – who was part of the Spurs scouting team that pushed for a move for Toby Alderweireld (via Sky Sports) – has predicted that Richarlison may well be about to launch himself onto the world stage within the next 12 months.
“Richarlison is a fine athlete and a player with exciting potential,” he told Sky Sports.
“If he goes to the World Cup with Brazil and does well, Watford could yet see those clubs who prioritise young athletic talent – namely Tottenham, RB Leipzig and AC Milan – willing to pay a vast increase on the £11m that they spent on him in order to prise him away from Vicarage Road.”
Given MacKenzie’s prediction, it may perhaps be a wise move for Tottenham to make sure they follow up their interest by pursuing the forward during the January transfer window.
If he does manage to book a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad, then it could become incredibly difficult to win the race for his signature as the number of sides interested will undoubtedly increase.
And of course, as MacKenzie alluded to, his price is bound to go up if he does feature at the World Cup, so perhaps Tottenham should take the gamble and confirm their interest with a bid in January. Based on how he has started life in the Premier League, it appears that it could be a risk worth taking.
