Harry Redknapp believes Benoit Assou-Ekotto is a better left-back than those currently at Manchester United, Manchester City and Southampton.
Given Tottenham Hotspur’s problems at left-back in recent months, it is something of a surprise that Benoit Assou-Ekotto remains on loan at Queens Park Rangers.
And yet while the man who was a regular starter in Harry Redknapp’s time at White Hart Lane now plays under the same boss at Loftus Road, Spurs are playing centre-backs as full-backs and hoping Danny Rose can hit the ground running on his much-needed return.
But if Redknapp’s latest quotes are to be believed, Andre Villas-Boas’s decision to send the Cameroon international on loan has seen him part with one of the best left-backs in English football.
In an interview published in West London Sport, the former Spurs boss said of Assou-Ekotto, “He’s in the top three left-backs in the country. He’s too good for most teams in the Premier League.
“There’s only Ashley Cole and (Leighton) Baines you’d take in front of him maybe. I couldn’t think of too many others. He’s top class and could play in any team.”
So if Redknapp is to be believed, Assou-Ekotto would get into the Manchester United team ahead of Patrice Evra, Manchester City’s ahead of Gael Clichy and Southampton’s ahead of Luke Shaw (to name a few).
Do you agree with the one-time England manager-elect? Or are there plenty of left-backs better than the one currently doing the business for QPR?
