And the story of Kevin Wimmer is absolutely typical of the Tottenham chairman’s skills.
Spurs picked up £18 million for the Austria centre-back [BBC Sport], who was eventually frozen out of a Stoke City squad that was relegated from the Premier League last term.
Wimmer joined Bundesliga side Hannover on a season-long loan and yet again the 26-year-old is in a tough situation.
If Wimmer, who has made 12 appearances this season, plays 24 games for the German outfit then they are obliged to buy him for £10 million.
Problem is, they ‘cannot afford’ to spend that money [Stoke Sentinel], which means they cannot afford to play him on a regular basis, and then that makes it very difficult for the defender to find any sort of rhythm.
Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Mainz was Wimmer’s first start since October. Last month, he was brought on in the 36th minute and taken off in the 64th.
It’s a desperate situation for the former Tottenham man who must have no idea where he is going to be plying his trade in the long term.
