Matty Pattison has told The Chronicle that Newcastle United should offer Andy Carroll a new contract.

Carroll is out of contract at Newcastle this summer, and it remains to be seen if the Magpies decide to keep the former West Ham United and Liverpool striker in their squad for next season.

Pattison played with the English striker in his first spell at Newcastle, and the former South Africa international midfielder – who now works as an academy coach at Gateshead FC – believes that the Magpies should hand him a new contract.

However, Pattison believes that if the proposed takeover of the club by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) – as reported by The Sun – goes through, then it could be an issue for Carroll regarding his future at Newcastle.

Pattison told The Chronicle about Carroll: “If the takeover goes ahead and the club will have this abundance of wealth, they’re going to look to bring in real top players at the peak of their game.

“If they sign the quality of player they’re talking about, opportunities might be a little bit limited. Where that leaves him, I don’t really know.

“Personally, being a mate and knowing what he’s capable of, I would look at giving him another year. Even to just have him around the place.

“For new players coming to the club, he’s a great character and he’s obviously a big player in the dressing room.”

New contract for Andy Carroll?

According to WhoScored, Carroll has made four starts and nine substitute appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle so far this season, providing three assists in the process.

The 31-year-old striker has had injury problems, and one can understand why Newcastle might feel that it would be a risk for them to hand the former Liverpool man even a new one-year deal.

However, when fully fit, Carroll is an asset to have in their squad, as he can make a good impact in games.

Meanwhile, The Chronicle has claimed that there has been no contact between Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz, with a source describing speculation regarding the player as ‘nonsense’.

Another player Newcastle have been linked with this summer is Malang Sarr, with FCInterNews claiming that the Magpies, West Ham United, Lazio, Inter Milan, Lyon and Eintracht Frankfurt all want him.

The report has added that the 21-year-old central defender wants a high salary and a four-year contract, with the youngster out of contract at Nice this summer.
