Newcastle United won promotion to the Premier League on Monday night.
Jozy Altidore
Former Sunderland striker Jozy Altidore has taken to Twitter to send a message to Newcastle United full back DeAndre Yedlin following the Magpies’ promotion to the Premier League.
Newcastle watched on over the weekend as Huddersfield Town lost 4-1 at home to Fulham, meaning they knew that a win over Preston North End on Monday night would be enough to seal promotion.
Against Preston, the Magpies took an early lead through Ayoze Perez before Jordan Hugill’s smart finish drew North End level, with Christian Atsu finishing off a swift counter attack before the break to put Newcastle back in front.
Matt Ritchie made it three from the penalty spot after Paul Gallagher had handled on the line and been red carded, before Perez added his second to seal a 4-1 victory for Newcastle.

The final whistle sparked huge celebrations on Tyneside, with Rafael Benitez guiding the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League last season.
After the game, a number of former Newcastle players celebrated the promotion on Twitter, but one ex-Sunderland man also decided to send a message about the Magpies’ success.
Newcastle United’s DeAndre Yedlin in action
Former striker Jozy Altidore, who was a Sunderland flop with just three goals in 52 games for the club, took to Twitter to congratulate fellow American and former Sunderland loanee DeAndre Yedlin, stating that Newcastle’s promotion was well deserved.
Whilst Sunderland fans would sooner forget about Altidore, his message won’t please some fans given that Newcastle will effectively be taking Sunderland’s place in the Premier League unless David Moyes can mount a remarkable survival bid to meet their rivals in the Premier League next season.
