Former Sunderland midfielder Jack Rodwell insists that the best years of his career are ahead of him following a shock move to A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the ex-Black Cats player claimed that he can return to his best after making the 10,000-mile transfer to Australia. The midfielder was last seen playing for Sheffield United in their two-year spell in the Premier League.
Rodwell left Sunderland in 2018, with the Evening Chronicle and Northern Echo labelling the midfielder as the worst signing in the club’s history.
The former Manchester City star famously refused to take a pay cut following Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship. With Rodwell making just two appearances in the second-tier before being dropped to the reserves.
Indeed, the now 30-year-old midfielder left a stain on his career with Sunderland. But now with Sydney, Rodwell is keen to return to his best form that made the midfielder once one of the most exciting talents in England.
Rodwell said: “I’m 30 years old and I still feel like that I’ve got the best years ahead of me. That’s why I came here, I didn’t come here to come on holiday. I’m here to give it my all. We’ve got a great team here, great manager so let’s see what we can do.”
Rodwell can revive career at Sydney with Sunderland episode still lingering

It’s hard to think of Rodwell without coming to the episode at Sunderland that all but tarnished his reputation with the Black Cats. Yet this move to Australia could be what’s needed for the midfielder to rebuild his career.
Indeed, the 30-year-old sounds keen to redeem himself in the A-League. And regular football for a top non-European side and away from the spotlight could be what’s needed for Rodwell to return to his best form.
