Mark Wotte has given his take on Rangers’ pursuit of a manger-Director of Football combo.
That Mark Wotte, a performance director for the Scottish FA for three years, has barely merited an inch of gossip column space concerning the vacancies at Rangers is something of a mystery.
The 56-year-old, a former Southampton manager, is well respected in the domestic game but has remained absent from speculation over the identity of Rangers’ Director of Football, the likes of Ross Wilson, Paul Mitchell and Stuart Webber reportedly in the frame instead.
However, as reported by the Evening Times, that does not mean he has no views on who would be the right man for the job. Or, in fact who wouldn’t.
26-year-old Robert Rowan, a former Celtic scout and Brentford’s current Head of Football Operations, was surprisingly linked with the vacant post recently while reports also suggested that Alan Irvine, the current Norwich assistant who has had just three brief spells in management, was also in the running to replace Mark Warburton at the helm.
The Daily Record claim these reports are wide of the mark and, according to Wotte, the pair’s relative inexperience means they were unsuitable candidates for such a huge club.
“We signed [Rowan] as a talent ID guy [for the Scottish FA],” Wotte told the Evening Times. “He is developing but he is still very raw. I think he has a lot of qualities but if it comes to the ticking of boxes, he is still on his way to doing a lot of that.”
“At Rangers Football Club if you had to work with a head coach like Alan Irvine (below) then you need to have been round the block a couple of times.
“You need to have gravitas in your discussions. It is almost impossible to do a job like Rangers football club without any real experience. So it would be a huge risk.”
Furthermore, if Rangers fans want the club to make a statement of intent, Rowan and Irvine would hardly strike fear into the hearts of their rivals.
