Southampton shocked a number of people with their performance last night. The Saints picked up a very impressive win against Manchester City thanks to a stunning goal from Che Adams.
The win took Hasenhuttl’s side to 13th place, just six points below seventh-placed Arsenal. That isn’t bad for a side who looked destined for relegation at one point after a 9-0 hammering by Leicester City.
The Southampton boss deserves a ton of credit for this incredible turnaround. Saints now have to kick on and do better next season and a former player has extremely high ambitions for the club.
Leandre Griffit took to Twitter to heap praise on his former side’s performance last night. The Frenchman got carried away a little bit and predicted a top-six finish for Southampton next term.
Surely that is a bit too much. Southampton have done incredibly well to get out of the hole they were in to climb up the table, but a top-six finish is a long way out to dream of, even for Griffit and their own fans.
Hasenhuttl’s aim next season has to be a top ten finish which in itself is a monumental challenge. The conventional top-six will always be the favourites for the European places.
Wolves, Sheffield United, Leicester City and Everton will do everything they can to challenge for a place in the top seven as well which will make it extremely difficult for the other sides to even enter the conversation.
Southampton fans should be proud of what their side have achieved this season. Hasenhuttl should be backed in the transfer window and as high as the club’s, fans’ and even Griffit’s aim will be for next season, the chance of a top-six finish is very close to zero.
