Aston Villa loanee Tyrone Mings has escaped punishment for stepping on the face of Reading opponent Nelson Oliveira.

SkySports reported that Oliveira had to undergo surgery after Mings failed to take evasive action.

Mings has avoided punishment because the FA rules do not permit retrospective action on an incident already seen by an official, BBC Sport reported.

Ex-Reading striker Dave Kitson has told The Sun that Mings should have copped a 10 game ban.

He is unhappy with the FA’s decision and believes the rules are farcical.

Kitson said: “This is Mings’ second stamp. After stamping on the head of Ibrahimovic, his punishment was a five-game ban. Surely a full investigation and, if found guilty, a ten-game ban for the stamp on Oliveira should have been

“However, because the referee saw the incident, the FA cannot act for fear of undermining one of their own. And yet we now have VAR exactly because referees get decisions wrong – whether they’ve seen them or not.

“It stands to reason then that if referees get penalty claims wrong then they can also get stamps wrong.”

It’s up to the FA to look at their own rules, or help the officials out with technology.

As it stands, Mings is free to continue playing and will feature for Villa this Friday evening in a Championship clash against Sheffield United.
