Former Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands has taken his first steps in management after he was confirmed as the new boss of Danish side Fremad Amager.

The Danes confirmed Lovenkrands’ appointment on their official website as the ex-Ibrox star gets back into coaching after leaving his role with the Gers’ Academy.

Fremad A play in the Danish First Divison – the second tier of Danish football – and Lovenkrands takes the reins from caretaker boss Jesper Christiansen (also an ex-Ger.)

“I’m really looking forward to entering the coaching office and meeting staff and players on Monday. Lovenkrands said after his new role was confirmed.

“It is a fantastic feeling to sign the contract, where I can now look forward to my first football stay in Denmark after more than 20 years abroad.

“First of all, I feel it is the right step for me. Already at the first phone conversation with Gaxe, I was inspired by the energy and thoughts he has about the composition of a team. I then traveled to Copenhagen to go even more in detail about the club as a whole and the direction we are going in.

“There is a very strong togetherness with the people who are part of everyday life in the club, and it appeals to me very much. I believe that everyone involved can make a difference for the club.”

While working as part of the coaching staff at Ibrox, Lovenkrands worked closely with Graeme Murty and the B team as they embarked on the club’s debut UEFA Youth League campaign.

His departure was originally meant to see him move to Japan to take up a coaching role before complications from Covid made it impossible for him.

As well as his spell at Rangers as a player, Lovenkrands played for Newcastle, Schalke, Birmingham City and AB.

Fremad A play their games at the 7,200-capacity Sundby Idrætspark and finished the 2020/21 season eighth in the league.
