Rangers have today confirmed that Jonatan Johansson has been appointed as a coach – and both Peter Lovenkrands and Kevin Thomson have taken to Twitter after missing out on the job.

The Gers enjoyed a thumping 3-0 win over Aberdeen this afternoon, and shortly after the final whistle at Pittodrie, Rangers announced a new arrival at Ibrox.

Manager Pedro Caixinha has been searching for a ‘local’ coach to work alongside him, offering knowledge on Rangers and Scottish football that the likes of Helder Baptista, Pedro Malta and Jose Belman can’t provide.

Six ex-Rangers players were interviewed for the job; Barry Ferguson, John Brown, Peter Lovenkrands, Alex Rae, Jonatan Johansson and Kevin Thomson, with all of them hoping to engineer returns to Ibrox.

Today, it was confirmed that former Gers striker and ex-Finland international Johansson has landed the position, ending weeks of speculation over the appointment.

Johansson will now get to work alongside Caixinha for the foreseeable future, returning to the club having scored 25 goals in 72 games for the Gers between 1997 and 2000 – and two of the men he beat to the job have taken to Twitter today to react.

Ex-Gers winger Peter Lovenkrands sent a message thanking Rangers and Caixinha for considering for the post, admitting he was ‘sad’ to miss out but wished Johansson the best of luck in the job.

Former midfielder Kevin Thomson, who is currently running an academy whilst doing punditry work for BT Sport, also posted on Twitter, admitting that even being considered was great recognition for his academy, and is ‘humbled’ that his hard work is being noticed.
