Derek McInnes has been linked with West Bromwich Albion and Glasgow Rangers, and Thompson doubts the Ibrox post will appeal as much.

The Scottish Sun reports that McInnes has been the Gers’ number one target ever since they parted company with Pedro Caixinha last month, but it appears that their reported hopes of landing him have suffered a blow.

According to The Scottish Sun, the Aberdeen boss is now on West Brom’s radar after they parted company with Tony Pulis on Monday. And Thompson has suggested that he expects McInnes to have a clear preference if he is offered a job by both clubs.
“Derek is a bit of a legend down there, I think he captained the team to promotion in 2002, and he’s very highly regarded. So I’m pretty sure if that job came up and he was asked to become manager, he’d very seriously consider it. You’re managing in the Premier League,” he said. as reported by The Scottish Sun.

“The state Rangers are in just now – no one really knows what the financial implications are when you take the job. I think West Brom might be more attractive right now.”
It remains to be seen if McInnes is given a choice to make, but you could certainly understand if he felt that West Brom could be the more interesting challenge.
If he feels that he can lead Rangers back to the summit of the Scottish Premiership and make them the force on the pitch that they were before their financial implosion, then it would be understandable if he decided to take the Ibrox job if an offer is made.
However, if he has his concerns about what he could do at Rangers, as Thompson suggests he may, then the West Brom job will undoubtedly appeal as the Premier League will give him a better opportunity to enhance his managerial reputation, and perhaps there may be less pressure on him at The Hawthorns than there would be at Ibrox given their respective expectations.
