Rangers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has been demoted this season.

Former Rangers captain David Weir has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks goalkeeper Wes Foderingham will be frustrated with the decision to bring in Allan McGregor over the summer.

The Gers have brought in 15 signings since Steven Gerrard’s appointment as Gers manager, and one of the first through the door was goalkeeper McGregor.

The veteran arrived from Hull City after a strong season in the Championship, returning to Ibrox having left Rangers in 2012 for a move to Turkey with Besiktas.

A Scotland international with major experience, McGregor immediately came in as Rangers’ first-choice goalkeeper, displacing Foderingham from the team.

Foderingham had been a key signing for Mark Warburton in the summer of 2015, having fallen short of promotion to the Championship with Swindon Town in the League One play-off final.

The Englishman had been fairly steady, but Gerrard clearly felt that he needed better, and could ultimately land better, by luring McGregor back to the club.

Now, ex-Rangers captain David Weir – who was Gers assistant under Warburton – has suggested that Foderingham will be ‘frustrated’ with Gerrard’s decision as he hasn’t done anything wrong, but even he must acknowledge that McGregor is a quality goalkeeper.

“Wes has done nothing wrong, he has been the goalie he has always been,” said Weir. “I am sure he will be frustrated, but on the other hand he will look at Allan and say to himself: ‘He isn’t bad, is he?’ McGregor rises to the challenge in front of him.”

“He knew coming in he would be under pressure to perform because there were other good keepers there. That is when he is at his best, when he is asked questions,” he added.
