Niko Kranjcar warming up during his Tottenham days
Niko Kranjcar’s father Zlatko has told The Scottish Sun that the playmaker is still in talks with Rangers about a possible move to Ibrox.
Kranjcar, 31, is currently over in America playing for New York Cosmos in the North American Soccer League – something of a fall from his days as a Premier League star.
The Croatian international, who scored 16 goals in 81 games for his country, starred in the Premier League for Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur, establishing himself as a dangerous and skillful playmaker under Harry Redknapp.
A failed move to Dynamo Kiev has eventually led Kranjcar to New York, but Rangers boss Mark Warburton has been pushing to bring him to Ibrox this summer.
It’s almost a month since Rangers first initiated contact with Kranjcar about a move to Glasgow, but the Daily Record reported last week that the deal was in doubt as Kranjcar’s actress wife Zrinka Cvitesic wasn’t so keen on a move to Scotland.
With four midfielders are already signed up for next season – Matt Crooks, Josh Windass, Joey Barton and Jordan Rossiter – some fans weren’t so gutted that the Kranjcar deal appeared to be collapsing.
Now though, there is hope that the deal is still on. Kranjcar’s father Zlatko has told The Scottish Sun that Niko is still in talks with Rangers and could join the club, but is currently out injured and is gearing up to come back – preferably in Europe.
“Niko’s contract with New York is about to run out and he’s injured. But he’ll be back and will play on,” said Kranjcar. “He could continue with Cosmos or go to Rangers, who he is still talking to. He wants to return to Europe and I think that would be good for him,” he added.
