Alan Pardew has explained why it may be difficult for Arsenal to land their key striker target in this January transfer window.
It is becoming clearer by the day that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are crying out for a new centre-forward following their 2-0 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium.
An own goal from Jakub Kiwior and a brilliant finish from Luis Diaz wrapped the game up for the Merseyside club who are seemingly back in the title hunt and this victory in the FA Cup will do wonders for the team’s morale.
This shouldn’t have been the case, however, as Arsenal had multiple chances to strike first but a combination of poor finishing and brilliant defending kept the home side out.

Pardew on why Arsenal will struggle
This profligacy in front of goal has led to clamours from the Gunners faithful to potentially target a striker in the January transfer window to solve these issues.
However, former Premier League manager Alan Pardew, speaking on TalkSport, has explained why the North London club will find it difficult to make a key acquisition in the winter window.
“It is very, very difficult in this window because the cards are all held by the selling clubs,” Pardew said. “So I know from my history in January, it is very difficult to do any kind of business, any meaningful business.
“I look at Arsenal and I can think of two names that can do the job there. You’ve got Toney and you’ve got [Victor] Osimhen. Those two, definitely, give Arsenal a chance of winning the Premier League.
“But you are talking about £100m-plus for the boy out in Italy for sure, he’d probably be the best bet. And Toney? What are Brentford going to ask for him at this stage?”
Toney could be the man
Despite currently being suspended due to the betting charges that he faced in the summer, Ivan Toney looks to be the most likely option for the Gunners at this moment in time.
It is unclear what Brentford would demand for the English striker but The Independent claims that it could well be in the region of £100 million, which is surely beyond Arsenal’s means, especially in January.
If that is the case, then the second-tier options may well be explored but unless the Gunners can make headway in the sales department, a new striker signing seems unlikely at this moment in time.
