Chris Hughton believes the Magpies have pulled off a real coup by signing Gayle and Ritchie.
Former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton has told the BBC, as quoted by the Chronicle, that the club have already bought two “top” Championship players this summer in the form of Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie.
Magpies manager Rafael Benitez has already signed five players in the transfer window as he looks to prepare his side for a promotion push this season.
He has brought in Belgian goalkeeper Matz Sels, defenders Isaac Hayden and Jesus Gamez, midfielder Matt Ritchie, and striker Dwight Gayle to bolster his ranks, spending £22 million on just Ritchie and Gayle.
Hughton, who spent around 18 months as permanent Magpies boss in 2009-10 after two caretakers stints, believes that the signings of those two players in particular represent superb additions at St. James’ Park.
The current Brighton and Hove Albion boss told the BBC, as quoted by the Chronicle: “I think Newcastle have acquired two top players already for this Championship. I think they’ll buy very well for this Championship.”
Ritchie and Gayle both bring Premier League pedigree to Newcastle, and Ritchie should be a more than able replacement for Andros Townsend, who was sold to Crystal Palace for £13 million earlier this summer.
Both players have impressive Championship pedigree having previously starred in the second tier before working their way up to the top flight, and Newcastle supporters will be hoping that they can take the league by storm once again this term.
