Scottish Premiership champions Celtic were reportedly willing to offer Vikor Fischer a lifeline before he moved to the Bundesliga instead.
Celtic appeared only too willing to help Viktor Fischer get his career back on track this season.
The Northern Echo reported in June that the Scottish champions were hoping to rescue the dazzling Dane from his ill-fated £3.8 million 2016 move to Middlesbrough. Fischer made only six Premier League starts and Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who had been tracking the 22-year-old for a number of years, was keen to bring him to Glasgow.
Instead, Fischer signed a four-year deal with Bundesliga’s mid-table usuals Mainz. Though the winger is yet to recapture the form that made former club Ajax fearful of losing him to Manchester United or Real Madrid back in his 2012 heyday, as reported by The Mirror.
Fischer, whose once shining career has been decimated by injuries, is yet to score or produce an assist in five Bundesliga appearances for a Mainz side who are yet to really find their feet in the top flight under new manager Sandro Schwarz.
And supporters have been left a little disappointed with his minimal impact so far, Fischer only featuring in 25 minutes of action in Mainz’ last two Bundesliga features.
Now, a player once valued as one of Europe’s hottest prospects certainly looked worth the risk for Celtic. After all, manager Brendan Rodgers has a habit of getting careers back on track.
And Fischer, the season before joining Middlesbrough, had shown a few glimpses of rediscovering that staggering potential. Though he still appears a long way from becoming the world class winger that many expected him to be.
Celtic, then, can probably do without for now.
