Newcastle can still sign free agents, so here are three strikers the Premier League club could secure for nothing.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez.
Newcastle United did not have the happiest of transfer windows this summer, with the Chronicle reporting they missed out on three deals on deadline day alone.
It is a sorry state of affairs that has lead to speculation over whether Rafa Benitez will continue as manager, but if owner Mike Ashley provides at least some funds there could be one saving grace to plug the gaps in the squad – free agents.
Despite a 3-0 win over West Ham United in their last Premier League outing, attack could well be the biggest issue for the Magpies so here are three free strikers they could consider.
Giuseppe Rossi during the Serie A match between ACF Fiorentina and AC Chievo Verona.
Giuseppe Rossi
This could be a big gamble and perhaps one they should not undertake until October, with Rossi currently sidelined until then with a cruciate ligament injury – the fourth of his career.
Whether that means it is a risk worth taking remains to be seen, but the Manchester United academy product is still just 30 and has shown good scoring form at Fiorentina and Villarreal in the past; as well as having had a loan spell with Newcastle in 2006.
Metz forward Cheick Diabate celebrates after scoring during the French L1 football match against PSG.
Cheick Diabate
Yet to find a new club since being released by Turkish side Osmanlispor this summer, Diabate has a decent record in French football where he has scored 58 Ligue 1 goals for the likes of Bordeaux, Ajaccio and Metz.
The 29-year-old also has 15 strikes in 37 caps for Mali and is a physically imposing forward who can capably lead the line.
Welliton
Like Diabate, this Brazilian does not have any experience in English football, but then when options are this limited something has to give.
Plus Welliton has proven himself elsewhere, with a decent scoring record of 61 goals in 133 games for Spartak Moscow, and also the ability to play out wide if needed.
