Roberto Di Matteo has told Chelsea’s official website that he wanted to sign Timo Werner when he was in charge of Aston Villa.

Werner is leaving RB Leipzig for Chelsea in the summer transfer window for a transfer fee reported by The Telegraph to be worth £47.5 million.

The 24-year-old is one of the best strikers in the world and has been superb for Leipzig in recent years.

According to WhoScored, the Germany international striker has scored 26 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga, and has scored four goals and provided two assists in the Champions League for Leipzig so far this season.

Werner has scored 16 goals and provided seven assists in the league during the 2018-19 campaign, according to WhoScored.

Former Chelsea player and manager Di Matteo was in charge of Villa from the summer of 2016 until October 2016, and he has said that he wanted to sign Werner from Stuttgart, but Leipzig got him instead.

Di Matteo told Chelsea’s official website about Werner: “When I was at Schalke he was at Stuttgart and he was just coming on to the scene.

“During the second part of the season, before I left, I was planning with my sporting director.

“I was saying I wanted to sign this guy, he’s good. He was young, quick, technically good. I said ‘can we not sign this boy Timo’.

“We didn’t in the end and then I resigned and so on. Then I went to Villa. Stuttgart, the season after, they got relegated, and so I enquired again to sign him, but then Leipzig signed him on.”

Relegation worries

Villa are in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers at Villa Park in the Premier League.

Dean Smith’s side are second from bottom in the league table at the moment.
