Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor says that Swansea City’s Ben Davies is the club’s long-term answer at left-back.

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor says that Swansea City’s Ben Davies would be a fantastic addition for the club, in light of reports linking the defender with a £10 million move to Anfield.

With first-choice left-back Jose Enrique out injured for most of last season, Liverpool were forced to call on Jon Flanagan to deputise and, despite the 21-year-old impressing in an unfamiliar role, Mellor believes that the club should look to Davies as the long-term answer in the position.

‘He’s proven at Premier League level and had a fantastic season at Swansea,’ he told Sky Sports News Radio. ‘I think left-back was a key area last season, with Jose Enrique’s injury, which Liverpool needed to fill.

‘Jon Flanagan did that extremely well but that’s not his natural position, so I think they’ll be looking at it long-term.

‘I know they’ve been linked with another player from Spain [Alberto Moreno] so I’m sure it’s an area Brendan Rodgers is looking to strengthen.’

With Glen Johnson’s future in the side looking bleak, the signing of Davies would allow Rodgers to move Flanagan back to his natural position at right-back and, while the club do have some up-and-coming options on the left, such as Jack Robinson and Marc Pelosi, the Swansea youngster still has a lot more potential to fulfil.

Having also targeted Sevilla’s £20m-rated Alberto Moreno to fill the position, Liverpool are thought to face strong competition from Tottenham Hotspur for the Welshman, but their recent cash windfall from the £75m sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona means that there is no shortage of funds.

Rodgers has spent close to £60m so far this summer on Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Emre Can and Lazar Markovic as he attempts to bolster the squad for another title-challenge.
