Ex-Liverpool manager Graeme Souness reacts to Alisson’s reported world-record Anfield move

Liverpool are reportedly set to sign Roma goalkeeper Alisson.

Former Liverpool hero Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that he thinks Jurgen Klopp is doing the right thing by targeting Roma goalkeeper Alisson.

The Reds have already brought in Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, whilst Naby Keita’s move from RB Leipzig has gone through as well having been agreed in 2017, but one position needed strengthening on top of that.

Liverpool have had issues in goal for a number of years, and Loris Karius not only endured a nightmare showing in the Champions League final against Real Madrid in May, but has also struggled in pre-season.

With Simon Mignolet not fancied as a top goalkeeper either and Danny Ward on his way to Leicester City, Liverpool have decided to splash the cash – and will break the world record fee for a goalkeeper.

Sky Sports report that Roma’s Alisson is in England for a medical with the Reds ahead of completing a £67million move to Anfield, with Liverpool paying out a huge fee for the Brazilian international.

Alisson, 25, has starred for Roma since his 2016 move from Internacional, and started ahead of Manchester City’s Ederson for Brazil at this summer’s World Cup having established himself as a world-class goalkeeper.

Now, former Liverpool midfielder and manager Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that he thinks Klopp is making the right decision by replacing Karius, as he simply can’t be trusted anymore after a series of mistakes, backing the move for Alisson as a ‘top goalkeeper’.

“I think as much as Jurgen would have wanted to be loyal and do right by the goalkeeper, he’s got to go out and get another one,” he said. “That’s simply because if Karius was to make the same mistake, or a mistake in a big game, it’d be down to the manager not correcting that situation. It’s obvious to everyone – look at what happened in the Champions League final. So if Klopp is out to get Alisson or another top goalkeeper, he’s doing the right thing,” Souness added.
