Everton did Liverpool no favours last night, as Marco Silva’s side failed to beat their title rivals.

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has leapt to the defence of Everton supporters, after they were accused of celebrating defeat last night.

The Daily Mail ran an article with the Twitter title: “Everton fans celebrate defeat to Manchester City as their loss knocks Liverpool off Premier League top spot.”

And former Liverpool man Fowler was quick to suggest that it was wrong to label such accusations at the Goodison Park crowd.

Everton were beaten 2-0 by City last night, and actually put up a decent fight against Pep Guardiola’s men.

The Toffees were competitive throughout the match, but were undone by goals from Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus.

City’s victory means that they have now overtaken Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings, although Jurgen Klopp’s side do have a game in hand.

Everton, meanwhile, are still in ninth place in the Premier League table – but have won just three of their last 13 matches.

Everton are next in action at the weekend when they take on Watford, while Liverpool face Bournemouth.
