Leeds United signed the Everton youngster on loan this season.
Former Leeds United man Andy Couzens has revealed on Twitter that defender Matthew Pennington is “the real deal”, according to his Everton-supporting acquaintances.
The 22-year-old joined Leeds from Everton on a season-long loan this summer.
And so far he has looked like quite a coup, having impressed in a 1-1 friendly with Borussia Monchengladbach in Austria a little earlier this month.
Pennington, an Everton academy graduate, has only managed seven Premier League appearances during his senior spell with the Toffees and has never played Championship football, though he has had stints with Coventry City and Walsall in League One.
Nevertheless, Couzens, who spent four years at Leeds in the 90s, claims he has been told by fans of the Goodison Park club that the Whites have made a good signing.
Pennington will expect to make his competitive debut on August 6 when United visit newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers for their Championship curtain-raiser.
He – and pretty much every Leeds fan – would like to be partnering Pontus Jansson in the middle of defence that day, but the big Swede has a two-game suspension to serve and will therefore link up with Liam Cooper, unless another centre-half is signed before then.
