Ex-Leeds United midfielder Tom Taiwo has been released by Falkirk.

Tom Taiwo of Falkirk controls the ball during the Stirlingshire Cup Final match between Falkirk and Stirling Albion at The Falkirk Stadium on July 22, 2014 Falkirk, Scotland.

Leeds United’s academy has produced some top talents over the years, some of whom have enjoyed great success with the Whites before heading onto Premier League clubs.

The likes of Danny Rose, James Milner, Aaron Lennon, Lewis Cook and Fabian Delph have all featured for England after leaving Leeds, but some players moved on with little success.

The most famous case saw Chelsea raid the Whites for Michael Woods and Tom Taiwo in a controversial move, given that they were accused of tapping up both players, as well as the aforementioned Rose, who joined Tottenham instead.

As reported by The Telegraph, Chelsea paid £5million to Leeds in order to settle the issue, and the case has become famous given that neither player lived up to expectations.

Woods is featuring in non-league football for Hartlepool United, whilst Taiwo’s career took another turn earlier this week as he was released by Scottish second division side Falkirk.

The 28-year-old midfielder has spent the last four years at Falkirk following spells with Hibernian and Carlisle United, but now finds himself as a free agent heading towards the summer transfer window.

A return to England may be on the cards for Taiwo, but he is one of the biggest cases of unfulfilled potential in English football from recent memory, and after having his career stunted at Chelsea, he may well have been better off staying at Leeds after all.
