Leeds United’s automatic promotion hopes suffered a bit of a blow on Saturday.
Noel Whelan has told BBC Radio Leeds that Leeds United’s promotion hopes are far from over following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat by Sheffield United at Elland Road.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side dropped out of the top two places in the Championship by losing to the Blades.
Victory would have given the Whites a five-point cushion in the automatic promotion spots.
But there are still eight games to go and the former Leeds hitman ‘can guarantee’ that Chris Wilder’s side and leaders Norwich City will have slip-ups.
He told BBC Radio Leeds: “There’s still 24 points to play for – that’s a lot of points and a lot of games to be won.
“There will be teams who will not go through the rest of the season unbeaten, I can guarantee that. There will be slip-ups from Norwich and Sheffield United along the way, and we have to make sure we capitalise on that.”
The encouraging thing for Leeds is that some of the pressure is now off them – and piled on Sheffield United.
The Brammall Lane club haven’t had to play under the sort of expectation that Bielsa’s troops have for most of this season and it’ll be interesting to see how they handle it.
Whelan is right. There will be dropped points and United just have to make sure tthat hey pounce on any openings that may come their way.
