After several months predominantly spent on the substitutes’ bench biding his time, Ronaldo Vieira got the chance on Sunday to make his first league start since securing his move away from Leeds in the summer.

The midfielder – who departed Elland Road for an initial fee of £7.7 million that could subsequently rise to £10 million, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post – went into the weekend still awaiting his first start for Sampdoria in Serie A.

But his chance finally came on Sunday as he was picked at the heart of midfield against Roma as his side looked to recover from a 4-1 defeat to Torino last weekend.

Unfortunately for Vieira, Sampdoria were beaten by the scoreline that also emerged one day earlier when Leeds suffered only their third Championship defeat of the season away at West Brom.

Vieira was arguably one of Sampdoria’s better performers, but it was still a 4-1 defeat on his full debut for the youngster who is looking to prove that Leeds were wrong to sell him.

It is certainly too soon to make any conclusions regarding whether Leeds made the right call in selling Vieira. If he can stay fit, he certainly has the potential to make the Whites rue cashing in. But at the moment, it appears that he has some way to go before his old club are kicking themselves for their summer decision.
