One EFL boss believes Reading have turned down eight-figure bids for a player who’s been linked with moves to Sheffield United, Leeds United and Aston Villa in the summer transfer window.
Steve Evans, the former Leeds manager, made the claim about John Swift after his Gillingham side lost to Reading in a friendly at the weekend.
Swift is said to be interesting Sheffield United, Leeds (both Berkshire Live) and Aston Villa (Reading Chronicle), although it is the Blades’ pursuit which is thought to have been the strongest.
It was claimed last week that the Reading owner Dai Yongge was trying to block the midfielder’s £3.5m move to Bramall Lane (Berkshire Live).
But as far as Evans is concerned, the offers tabled for Swift so far are considerably higher.
“Credit to Mark Bowen and Reading,” the Scot told Gillingham’s official Youtube channel. “You’ve got centre-backs there getting bids of seven or eight million (pounds), you’ve got John Swift, who had as a kid up at Rotherham, on loan from Chelsea. I think they turned down over 10 million (pounds).”

It was reported as recently as Monday that Sheffield United remain confident of a deal for Swift (Star), with no further mention of Leeds or Aston Villa.
