Rangers hero Stuart McCall is an admirer of linked Alex Gilliead.

Rangers are reportedly considering a swoop for Alex Gilliead, according to The Evening Chronicle.

Gilliead is a free agent after his release from Newcastle and Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is said to be weighing up a swoop.

If Rangers need a qualified opinion on Gilliead’s talents, then they need look no further than ex-Gers hero Stuart McCall.

Bradford City manager Stuart McCall looks on during the Sky Bet League One match between Northampton Town and Bradford City at Sixfields on September 23, 2017 in Northampton, England.

The 22-year-old winger played under McCall at Bradford City in 2017/18 and the Scot is a big fan of the potentially Ibrox bound talent.

Speaking to Bradford City’s official website in January, McCall said: “I’m understandably delighted that we’ve managed to keep hold of Alex.

“He has kept improving as the season has gone on. We said back in the summer when we were trying to entice him to return to the club that he would be given a good chance in the team, and he has certainly taken it.

“He adds something different to our squad. He gives us natural width, especially down that right hand side.

“He has got stronger and stronger, and he is becoming an important part of our team.”

Gilliead is weighing up his options and Rangers are certainly an attractive proposition.

He is at a pivotal stage in his development where he needs to play regularly, and if Rangers can’t promise him that, then he is best served looking elsewhere.

Yet given the size of Rangers and lure of working with Gerrard, Gilliead would find it tough to turn the opportunity down.
