Fabrice Muamba has something of a history with heart problems … so you can understand why he might have had to stop watching the Chelsea v Arsenal game today.
If you are an Arsenal fan today was quite frankly a terrible day.
In what started with such optimism – being Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th game in charge of the club – ended in misery as Chelsea put them to the sword in a stunning 6-0 win.
The game was open from the start – and Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle quickly got the ball rolling with a couple of early goals.
Then came Gibbs-gate.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handled the ball from an Eden Hazard strike and should have been sent off – only for referee Andre Marriner to get it wrong and send off Kieran Gibbs for an early bath instead.
Hazard scored the penalty – and from there it was a thrashing.
Oscar bagged a brace before the rout was finished off by newbie Mohamed Salah – his first goal for the club.
6-0 the final score, and any Arsenal fans who stuck around until the final whistle deserve a medal – as this was a painful experience for a neutral let alone a fan.
One person who couldn’t watch the whole thing was Fabrice Muamba.
Muamba was a youngster at Arsenal – playing for the club from 2002 until a switch to Birmingham City in 2007.
Of course Muamba, who went on to play for Bolton Wanderers, is now retired at the age of 25. He suffered a heart attack whilst playing for The Trotters in an FA Cup match against Spurs in March 2012.
Despite dreams of a comeback he never did return to action and retired in August of the same year.
Nowadays doing some TV work as well as working toward a journalism degree he is also active on Twitter.
And he took the loss in good jest eventually today – suggesting his doctor had advised him to stop watching the horror show.
Can’t really blame him.
