Alan Hutton made almost 100 appearances during his previous Ibrox side Rangers, but does Steven Gerrard need him now?
Hutton is currently a free agent after his contract with Aston Villa expired, but he has suggested that a move north of the border again would appeal.
Hutton’s last spell in Scotland was with Rangers, and he spent five years at Ibrox before leaving.
Hutton left Rangers to join Tottenham Hotspur and he has been in English football ever since.
The experienced right-back is now searching for a new club though, but he is yet to receive an offer which has really appealed to him.
“There’s been nothing from Scotland,” he said. “I’d listen to all offers. If that was to move back home, that would be a possibility.
“I don’t want to look back and think I should have played an extra couple of years. My mind is telling me to stick with, stay fit, and something might come up.”
Should Rangers move now?
With Hutton showing a willingness to return to Scotland, Steven Gerrard may have looked at the experienced full-back’s comments.
However, it seems that Rangers have moved on without the 34-year-old now.
Hutton would only re-join Rangers as back-up to James Tavernier, and it is arguable whether he is needed.
Rangers already have Jon Flanagan who can feel in at right-back as cover, and Ross McCrorie has also been playing there on a loan spell with Portsmouth.
With Hutton now reaching the age of 34, he would only be a very short term option for the Blues.
And even though a return to Scotland may now appeal to Hutton, Gerrard’s side seem unlikely to be the club which offers him a contract.
