Sunderland have signed a number of Osman’s old teammates at Everton.

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman has joked that he doesn’t go out in case he gets a phone call from Sunderland boss David Moyes.

Since taking the reins last July Moyes has signed five of his former Toffees for the Mackems, with Bryan Oviedo, Joleon Lescott and Darron Gibson following Steven Pienaar and Victor Anichebe to Wearside this winter.

And, though unlikely, having yet to find a new club since leaving Goodison Park eight months ago, it is possible Osman could increase that tally to six with Sunderland’s midfield injury problems mounting.

Lee Cattermole, Jan Kirchhoff, Paddy McNair and Jack Rodwell – another former Evertonian – are all currently sidelined, and given the 35-year-old’s vast experience, there are perhaps worse candidates to replace them in the meantime.

Has it come to this? Could Sunderland turn to 2015 target, now a free agent, to solve their striker crisis?

“Sunderland have been struggling of late, but they have made some good signings,” Osman told BBC Two’s MOTD2 Extra on Sunday.

“They have brought Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo in from Everton so he will know what he can get out of them and how quickly he can introduce them and Oviedo played well.”

And when asked if he could be next at the Stadium of Light, the Wiganer replied: “I have been waiting by the phone, I don’t go out anymore just in case it is going to ring!”

Leon Osman asked if he fancies Rangers move; responds

Osman was heavily linked with a move to Glasgow Rangers late last year, though a move failed to materialise.

The veteran midfielder played alongside the Gers’ assistant boss David Weir at Goodison Park.

Would Osman be a good short-term addition for Sunderland?
