Everton could have reportedly signed now-Liverpool star Andrew Robertson for £1.5 million four years ago.
This past weekend illustrated a big difference in class between Liverpool and Everton’s left-back options.
Cuco Martina surely had one of the worst games of his career as Everton were thumped 4-0 away to Tottenham Hotspur.
In contrast, Andrew Robertson had one of the best of his as Liverpool beat Manchester City 4-3 at Anfield to end the Premier League leaders’ unbeaten run this season.
Fans of the Goodison Park club tore into Martina on Twitter afterwards, but they might be a lot more angry if they knew that things could have been very different.
The Daily Star reported in January 2014 that then-Everton boss Roberto Martinez scouted Robertson at Dundee United, who demanded a £1.5 million fee but, according to the report, the Merseysiders were only willing to stump up £750,000.
Hindsight is a great thing and it’s worth pointing out that this was before Everton were flexing financial muscle in the Premier League through Farhad Moshiri’s investment.
Even still, Martinez could have probably rustled up the extra £750,000 needed to sign Robertson, given that Romelu Lukaku was signed for £28 million six months later.
Time has proven it to be a major mistake by the now-Belgium manager, and Liverpool fans might think his signing to be a little sweeter if that report is accurate – especially in light of Martina’s horrorshow.
