Bain moved to Celtic earlier this year after being forced out of Dens Park.

A former Dundee player has lifted the lid on how Celtic were able to sign ‘one of Scotland’s best goalkeepers’ for nothing.

Kevin Holt left Dens Park for Pafos FC at the end of his contract in the summer, as Scott Bain completed a free transfer move to Celtic.

Bain had been on loan to the Scottish champions, having found himself frozen out under Neil McCann – the recently sacked Dundee manager and a former Rangers player.

And Holt has told the Scottish Sun his former club have ‘paid the price’ for McCann’s emotional management style.

“You never want to see anyone lose their job. I still have a lot of friends at Dundee,” said Holt.

“But am I surprised? No. Neil is an emotional character. He would lose it after games and then on the Monday he would come in and admit he’d gone too far. That kind of passion is not necessarily a bad thing in a manager.

“But he would also fall out with players far too easily in the heat of the moment, like with Scott.

“That led to players who were more than good enough to play every week leaving the club. And it’s Dundee who pay the price for that in terms of lost transfer fees or having to pay up guys’ contracts.

“Scott is one of the best keepers in Scotland – the fact he’s at Celtic now tells you that. But he left the club for free because Neil fell out with him.”

Bain was for three years a regular in the Dundee team, and is said to have attracted interest Celtic’s interest a year before the Bhoys pounced.

The 26-year-old had 18 months left on his contract back then, and would have commanded a transfer fee.

He has appeared nine times for Brendan Rodgers’ team to date, but only twice this season.

How much should Bain have cost Celtic?
