Former Derby County striker Jahmal Hector-Ingram is ‘buzzing’ after signing for Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone.

Hector-Ingram joined Derby from West Ham in 2019.

He showed promise with their U23s, scoring 12 goals in 22 appearances, but didn’t manage to make an impact at senior level.

The 23-year-old made eight first-team appearances for the Rams and one on loan at Stevenage before being released at the end of last season.

He’s been without a club for a number of months but has been offered a chance by St Johnstone, who’ve handed him a deal until the end of the season.

The signing was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

“I am buzzing about this move, it is a great opportunity for me and I thank everyone at St Johnstone for showing faith in me,” Hector-Ingram told St Johnstone’s official website.

“I’ve already had a couple of training sessions with the lads, I’ve been really impressed with the standard of my new teammates and with the level of coaching from the gaffer and his staff.

“I am well aware there is a big challenge ahead and I am ready to face that challenge head on.”

St Johnstone turn to ex-Derby striker to solve goal woes

The big challenge Hector-Ingram is referring to is St Johnstone’s battle to beat the drop.

Callum Davidson managed the Perth club to an incredible domestic cup double and a fifth-placed finish last season but things have gone sharply downhill since then.

The Saints are currently bottom of the league, having won just three of their 22 matches so far this campaign.

While their defence hasn’t been as strong as Davidson would like, it’s at the top end of the pitch that they’ve really struggled.

They’ve only managed 11 league goals so far and that’s a stat the manager will be hoping Hector-Ingram is able to change dramatically.

If he can do that, he may well earn himself a longer deal at McDiarmid Park.
