Former Derby and Newcastle manager Steve McClaren rejects Wigan. What happened Steve?

Steve McClaren has rejected the offer to become the new manager at Wigan Athletic after quickly rising to become among the favourites for the job.
The Derby Telegraph reports that McClaren turned down the chance to return to management with the Latics – who were relegated to Sky Bet League One in 2016/17.

It is quite the fall from grace for the former England boss, who’s three most recent jobs have seen him sacked by Derby County (twice) and Newcastle United.
Following the debacle with the Three Lions, McClaren did rebuild his reputation somewhat on the continent, winning the Eredivisie with FC Twente for the one and only time to date in the club’s history.
However, then being sacked by Wolfsburg and resigning as boss of Nottingham Forest and Twente (second time around) following short stints, before his most recent struggles with Derby and Newcastle, has seen the 56-year-old’s job prospects become increasingly less glamourous.

Clearly McClaren does not see himself as a third tier manager just yet – or not at the DW Stadium at least – but as his CV is more and more tarnished, that could be the route he has to take soon.
Wigan, meanwhile, have reportedly turned their interest to Portsmouth boss Paul Cook, Luton Town’s Nathan Jones, or Uwe Rosler of Fleetwood Town.
