Alfredo Morelos of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers hasn’t scored against Old Firm rivals Celtic yet.
Pierre van Hooijdonk has told The Glasgow Evening Times that Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos will be disappointed with his record against Celtic, even if he’s ripping it up against everyone else.
The Rangers marksman is leading the way in the Golden Boot stakes in the Scottish Premiership with 12 goals, three more than Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard in second.
Morelos started and finished the Gers’ 1-0 win over Brendan Rodgers’s side at Ibrox in December to ensure that he has now gone seven games without an Old Firm goal.
The Colombian marksman is enjoying a brilliant season under Steven Gerrard, but former Celtic striker Van Hooijdonk believes that his dry spell against the Hoops will play on his mind.
“Morelos has scored a lot of goals and the only thing missing is an Old Firm strike. That will definitely be in his head because South American strikers are selfish and just think ‘goals, goals, goals’.
“He’s a handful and a bit crazy but he’s scored a lot of goals and he’s terrible to play against – one of these guys who would hate VAR to come in!
“He’s a good player but he’s missed big chances – and not just 50-50 ones – against Celtic. He’ll feel the need to score against them. If he never had a chance then he could always hold his hands up, but he has and it’s unusual he hasn’t taken any.”
It’s only a matter of time before he breaks his duck against Celtic.
As Van Hooijdonk pointed out, he does get chances and sooner or later he will score against the Bhoys.
But it is the one thing holding him back from being a Rangers great at the moment. He has the ability and the goalscoring, but if he can’t bring both qualities to the biggest stage then he will not be as remembered as fondly by the Ibrox faithful.
